During both sessions, Fr. Pierluigi Cameroni shared reflections on the theme of miracles in the Causes of Saints. A miracle is considered a confirmation from God—digitus Dei—in response to the prayers of the faithful invoking the intercession of a specific candidate for sainthood. It is essential to study reported graces and select cases that seem most compelling.
From a medical-scientific perspective, key elements in miraculous healings include diagnosis, prognosis, therapy, and its impact on recovery, which must be instantaneous, complete, lasting, and scientifically inexplicable. From a theological standpoint, it is necessary to demonstrate that the miracle occurred through the intercession of a Servant of God, a Venerable, or a Blessed who was prayed to.
Sr. Francesca Caggiano, FMA, presented the life of Blessed Maria Troncatti, FMA, a mother, missionary, and artisan of peace and reconciliation. She highlighted key moments in Maria Troncatti’s life where she demonstrated Christian hope—such as surviving the 1915 Varazze flood through the intercession of Mary Help of Christians, overcoming hardships in her mission in Ecuador’s Amazon rainforest, and persuading the Shuar people to renounce violence against white settlers. She told them: “We have taught you to be charitable and to forgive offenses. If you truly love me, lay down your weapons at my feet.” She ultimately offered her life for peace.
Sr. Caggiano also recounted the miracle leading to Maria Troncatti’s upcoming canonization: the miraculous healing of a man from a severe cranioencephalic trauma—an extraordinary event that attests to the power of prayer and trust in God, the source of all gifts and graces through the intercession of His Servants.
Diego Occhiena, President of the Friends of the Mamma Margherita Museum Association, presented Venerable Margherita Occhiena as a pilgrim of hope. Despite enduring immense hardships in her life, Mamma Margherita never succumbed to despair, discouragement, or pessimism. Her unwavering trust in Divine Providence and her focus on heaven allowed her to rise above life’s trials and move forward.
Fr. Juan Edmundo Vecchi, the 8th Successor of Don Bosco, once said of her: “Mamma Margherita endured a troubled life, which only a boundless hope could sustain and direct toward good, as she did.”
