RMG – The social works that give life to Don Bosco today: "Ciudad Don Bosco" Medellín

23 January 2025

(ANS – Rome) – The first social work that is presented for the Feast of Don Bosco 2025, as a tribute to the Turin saint's commitment to the most abandoned young people, is the "Ciudad Don Bosco" Salesian centre in Medellín. As a Salesian house, Ciudad Don Bosco welcomes children, adolescents and young people in situations of vulnerability and risk due to the violation of their rights. Its beneficiaries find a welcoming home there where they are protected and receive support for their development and personal growth.

Under the Don Bosco Preventive System, the centre promotes the integral education of young people. In collaboration with public and private bodies, it encourages each of them to build their own life project, always supporting the values that are fundamental pillars of the community: justice, peace and reconciliation. Ciudad Don Bosco beneficiaries have access to quality school education, technical training and pedagogical support, all aimed at providing them with the necessary tools to achieve a future full of opportunities. Led by Jesus, Mary Help of Christians and St John Bosco, the educative and pastoral community puts into practice daily the values that form children, adolescents and young people as people who testify to love and care for themselves, for those around them and towards our Common Home.

Art, culture and the healthy use of free time are fundamental tools for change. Spaces for fun, sport and folklore act as real agents to combat hostile social contexts and vulnerability. This is why Ciudad Don Bosco consolidates the dynamics that bring young people into an atmosphere of joy, celebration and communion, and in its courtyard there is always room for everyone!

The "Building Dreams" program of the Specialized Protection House (CAPRE, in Spanish) is aimed at adolescents and young people, boys and girls, removed from organised illegal armed groups and criminal gangs, between the ages of 14 and 18. Most of them come from rural areas of various regions of the country and belong to different ethnic groups, such as Afro-descendants and indigenous people. These young people often present with socio-cultural delays, slower learning rates, behavioural difficulties and emotional problems.

As a firm commitment to justice, peace and reconciliation, and in coordination with the State, the centre also promotes socialising meetings in an atmosphere of true Salesian joy. The main objective of these events is to strengthen the family ties of the young guests at the centre, providing a space for emotional and social accompaniment to promote family cohesion as a basis for their reintegration and integral development.

Ciudad Don Bosco, a standard-bearer in the global care and formation processes for children, adolescents, young people and families, continues to work tirelessly to offer opportunities for growth and transformation, contributing to the construction of a more just and peaceful society.

Its other successful programmes include:

MICHELE MAGONE PROGRAM. Developed as a boarding school and aimed at young males wounded by their lived experiences, it provides for two phases until the minor reaches the age of majority. The program responds to the restoration of the rights of these adolescents, with a global approach that emphasizes school growth, the strengthening of skills and preparation for the transition to adulthood. The whole process includes a close accompaniment in the recognition of their personal, family and social achievements, ensuring that they can face the future with greater autonomy and confidence.

"SEEDS OF LIFE" PROGRAM. Ensuring the restoration of the rights of the youngest children in the protection system, those under the age of 10-12 who are homeless or at risk of being homeless, is fundamental for every society. To achieve this goal, the program creates an affective and protective environment that contributes to the acquisition of tools useful for the personal development of the child, for his construction of generative networks and access to services and opportunities. The goal is to help them define an alternative life project that allows them to recognize themselves as subjects with rights and duties, with the ultimate goal of achieving their social inclusion.

"LEAVING FOOTPRINTS" PROGRAM. With the aim of promoting the integral development of children and evangelizing young people through education, the program extends the processes of accompaniment to children, adolescents and young people in the municipalities of the southwest of Antioquia, more precisely in Angelópolis and Amagá. This program was created with the aim of promoting the development of autonomy and the formation of a life project that favors family cohesion and the social adaptation of children and adolescents of the municipality of Amagá whose rights are threatened, not observed and/or violated. Through a global approach that includes education, emotional support and recreational activities, it seeks to provide tools to build a safer and more stable future. In addition, it encourages the active participation of families in the process, recognizing their fundamental role in the well-being of children and in the creation of positive environments that favor their personal and social growth.
