Spain – 10th anniversary of the "Functional Print Cluster" in Navarre

13 November 2024

(ANS – Pamplona) – On November 6, 2024, the 10th anniversary of the "Functional Print Cluster" was celebrated, of which the Salesian centre in Pamplona is a founding member. It is an institution that does research and collaborates in innovation in the graphic arts sector.

The "Functional Print Cluster" is a group of companies, technology centres and knowledge centres (universities and vocational training) operating in the graphic arts and electronics sector, which pursues innovation in these sectors through functional printing.

Functional printing consists of the creation, through printing, of products equipped with new features. Traditional printing technologies (screen printing, inkjet, offset, rotogravure, etc.) are used with advanced materials such as conductive, bioactive or thermochromic inks on all types of substrates (paper, plastic, fabric, glass, metal, etc.), thus obtaining high added value products with multiple applications, mass or customised, at low cost and with a lower environmental impact. Thus circuits, alarms, sensors, antennas, batteries, keyboards, screens, active and/or intelligent packaging and labels, solar panels, lamps, biological and electrochemical tests can be produced...

The Salesian centre in Pamplona, as a centre of knowledge in the Vocational Training sector, contributes with its experience and didactic knowledge and focuses its work on training young people for their better integration into the labour market. An example is the "INFINITE" project, in which they are now involved together with the "Functional Print Cluster".

Under the motto: "For 10 YEARS at the forefront of industrial transformation, increasing value, enhancing industry and internationalisation", the participants experienced a reference meeting for the entire sector, in which companies from different sectors, experts in functional printing, innovation and internationalisation were able to create synergies, meet other companies and create possible relationships for innovative developments between professionals at the regional, national and international levels.

The conference was opened by Mikel Irujo, Minister for Industry and the Ecological and Digital-Business Transition of Navarre, and closed by Patricia Fanlo, Minister for University, Innovation and Digital Transformation of Navarre.

As Susana Barasoain, Administrator of the Functional Print Cluster, said: "The Functional Print Cluster plays an important role in driving industrial innovation and in the transmission of new printing technologies to industry".

The Salesians were represented by Jorge Lanchas,  Director General of the centre; Josemi Puncel, Coordinator of the Erasmus CoVE INFINITE Project; Miguel Astiz, Head of the Department of Electricity-Electronics and member of the INFINITE project working group; and Miren Garate, Head of the Department of Graphic Arts, Member of the Board of Directors of the Cluster since its creation and member of the working group of the aforementioned project.

In addition, during the morning of the event, a "showroom" of printed electronics and plastronics was set up, where it was possible to learn about the capabilities and technological advances and their areas of impact (health, mobility, packaging or IoT). In this space, the Salesians in Pamplona presented the work carried out as part of the INFINITE project.
