The Philippines – DB Tech ASEAN International TVET Conference 2024

11 September 2024

(ANS - Makati City) – Under the leadership of its Regional Director, Fr Jose Dindo Vitug SDB, Don Bosco Tech ASEAN organised the International TVET Conference 2024 on “Skills Development In A Transformative World: Resilience, Innovation and Inclusion". The conference was held from 5 to 9 September 2024 at the Don Bosco Technical School in Makati, Philippines.

At the beginning of the international conference, the FIN Provincial, Fr Gerry Martin SDB, acknowledged the competent speakers and participants who came from different parts of the world, especially from the Salesian Vocational Training Centres in the region. The topics discussed in the plenary sessions were the following: TVET – Skills Development and Global Trend; TVET – Green Transition and Sustainability; TVET – Digital Transformation; and TVET - Gender Equality and Social Inclusion. After each discussion on a topic, there was a panel discussion, usually with four other experts and practitioners in the field, to tackle how things are being implemented in the different countries and institutions.

The speakers emphasised the need for skills and digital literacy in the wake of Artificial Intelligence, which must not be seen as a tool to replace humans with technology, but as an instrument for institutions to continuously train and improve educators in terms of content and pedagogy to make students more work-ready in the industry. The values of inclusivity and ecology and the accompanying ethical responsibility in caring for creation and the common home fostered genuine compassion for the environment and people from different backgrounds.

Certainly, this conference provided further opportunities for Salesian administrators and educators to rethink and revise their education and formation programs to better align with the Salesian Educational Pastoral Plan. Thanks also to Don Bosco Mondo who encourages and supports this capacity-building activity for the benefit of the TVET educators and to achieve Don Bosco’s vision to make young people good Christians and upright citizens.

Aside from the plenary discussions, there were also exhibits on robotics, drones, green curricula, automobiles and others that were professionally handled by some reliable companies promoting their respective causes and products.

This event was made even more special by the presence and accompaniment of the Youth Ministry Sector in Rome through its representative, Fr Jose Lorbeth Vivo SDB, who came on behalf of Fr Miguel Angel Garcia SDB, the General Councillor for Youth Ministry, and by the other regional or continental directors: Fr.Dindo himself (representing DB Tech ASEAN); Fr George Matthew (DB Tech South Asia); Fr Maximus Okoro (DB Tech Africa); Fr Claudio Cartes (DB Tech Americas) and Mr Piero Fabris (DB Tech Europe). Fr Max and Mr Piero even participated in their respective panel discussions.

The TVET International Conference ended with a cultural program visiting the historical sites and museums of Intramuros, Manila.

With this historic international TVET conference, both the organisers and the participants are grateful to come together in an international event, learn about important and timely topics that will challenge all TVET institutions to update their holistic curricula and promote higher qualification of their educators, network with potential partners from the industry and other TVET institutions, and celebrate Salesian education and spirituality that unites all Salesian TVET institutions and them with the participants who are newly introduced to the Salesian style of education.
