RMG – Submissions for Don Bosco Global Youth Film Festival 2024 extended

29 July 2024

(ANS - Rome) - With only a few days left before the initial deadline for short film submissions for the Don Bosco Global Youth Film Festival 2024 (DBGYFF), the world-class Salesian youth film festival, the organizing committee of the DBGYFF has decided to grant an additional week of time: the deadline has been extended, from July 31 to August 7, 2024.

The motivation for this choice was the enthusiasm registered among the many young people around the world. “I am very happy with the response we are receiving from so many countries and realities, among Salesians and young people,” reported Fr. Gildasio Mendes, the General Councilor for Social Communication. I am grateful to the Social Communication Delegates in a special way for all that they have done and are doing to make this project more and more meaningful.”

DBGYFF, season 3 aims to  motivate young people all over the world to work together in creating a greener and more sustainable world, under the festival's motto: “I Have a Dream - Youth and Climate Change - Making Mother Earth Cleaner and Greener.” This powerful message unites in a captivating challenge of the Salesian theme of dreaming, crucial for the Salesian Family - especially in this Bicentennial year of John Bosco's Nine Year Dream - and that of caring for Creation and the Common Home, which has already sensitized and activated millions of young people globally in promoting environmental protection paths and initiatives.

The capacity to capture the essence of two important aspects for the youth and Salesian community, which are the main focus of this third edition of the festival, is undeniably one of the factors contributing to the enthusiastic and substantial participation from young people in Salesian institutions worldwide. Moreover, while the interest in DBGYFF is widespread across Salesian settings, there are certain institutions that truly shine due to the creativity and expertise dedicated to this initiative.

One instance is when the festival's Organizing Committee highlights a Salesian institution that organized filmmaking workshops conducted by professional filmmakers to boost youth involvement in the festival. Another example is a house that is motivating its young residents to create and submit 25 unique short films to commemorate the house's 25th anniversary.

In addition to engaging youth, progress is also being made within the central organization. The different preliminary panels, operating at the regional level, have been established to provide an initial evaluation of the short films submitted and to choose the ones worthy of advancing to the final round. These panels have already been predominantly assembled, with over 100 experts and influential figures from the film industry, Salesian community, educational sector, and cultural realm offering their voluntary services.

With the aim of ensuring a high level of assurance, quality and impartiality of the selection processes, as in previous years, each film that will be nominated to the DBGYFF will be evaluated by three different regional juries. Subsequently, the Grand Jury will assess and review the most qualified candidates, with a total of 12 members already selected for this purpose.

With extensive research and analysis, the primary location for the DBGYFF World Finale has been determined. While the festival will be organized in numerous venues worldwide during the weekend of Oct. 17-18, 2024, the ultimate showcase featuring the announcement of the globally winning shorts is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 18 at the “Loreto Theater” within the “Sheen Center” in New York City.

The Director of DBGYFF is looking ahead to the last few weeks of festival preparations with hope and confidence. This initiative is fostering a strong awareness of environmental issues and a sense of responsibility towards our Common Home among young people. It is heartening to see the deep and widespread involvement of young individuals in this project, which unites them and provides them with a platform to express their dreams and visions for building a better world. I am convinced that DBGYFF will deliver messages of hope to the world and will have a significant impact on the hearts of young people in all the places where it will be celebrated on October 17-18, 2024.
