Italy – New Salesian Pontifical University Vice-Rector appointed: Fr Kevin Otieno Mwandha

(ANS - Rome) - The communications office of the Salesian Pontifical University (UPS) announced that on Monday, 24 June 2024, Card. Ángel Fernández Artime, Rector Major of the Salesian Society of St John Bosco, in his capacity as Grand Chancellor of the Salesian Pontifical University (UPS), appointed Prof. Fr. Kevin Otieno Mwandha, Vice-Rector of UPS for the next three-year period 2024-2027, starting from 3 August.

Thanking for the trust, Fr Mwandha, the first Salesian from the African continent to take up this position at UPS, expressed his personal commitment to carry out his mandate in close collaboration with the Rector Magnificus, Fr Andrea Bozzolo.

Born in Siaya, Kenya, on 24 April 1975, and a Salesian since 15 August 1999, Prof. Mwandha is an expert in Canon Law. He did his novitiate in Moshi, Tanzania, and made his perpetual vows in Nairobi on 6 August 2006, being ordained a priest on 12 June 2008 in Kibuye.

After studying Philosophy at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa, near Nairobi, he obtained a Baccalaureate in Theology and a Licentiate in Canon Law at UPS, before receiving his Doctorate from the Faculty of Canon Law at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross, in Rome, in 2014.

He is Full time Professor of Canon Law at the Faculty of Theology of UPS and has been Vice Dean of the same Faculty since 2023. He is a guest lecturer at the Pontifical College of Saint Bede (Rome) and at the Studium Theologicum Salesianum (Jerusalem). He as also the Former Director of the Institute of Dogmatic Theology (2020-2023), a guest lecturer at the 'Tangaza University College' in Nairobi, Kenya, and at the 'Don Bosco Utume Salesian Theological College', also in Nairobi.

He is the author of numerous publications, including: 'Doubt of Law. Juridical and Moral Consequences', (LAS, Rome 2016); 'De potestate regiminis. The role of women in the Church today' (LAS, Rome, 2021); 'The protection of minors and vulnerable adults against sexual abuse' (LAS, Rome 2022); 'Disaffiliation from the Catholic Church' (New Delhi, Christian World Imprints 2022); 'Defection from the Catholic Church in Kenya' (New Delhi, Christian World Imprints 2024).

He is a member of the 'Consociatio Internationalis Studio Iuris Canonici Promovendo'.

The Rector Magnificus, Fr Bozzolo, also took the opportunity to express to the outgoing Vice-Rector, Fr Michal Vojtas, on his own behalf and on behalf of the entire Academic Community, his heartfelt thanks for his generous and competent collaboration. Prof. Vojtas will continue to serve as the Rector's delegate for the Salesian Institutions of Higher Education (IUS).
