Italy – A bike path dedicated to the Venerable Fr Francesco Convertini

04 July 2024

(ANS – Locorotondo) – The Francesco Convertini bicycle path was inaugurated on the morning of Saturday 29 June 2024, on the 89th anniversary of the ordination of the Venerable Fr Francesco Convertini, SDB, in Piazza Antonio Mitrano in Locorotondo (Bari), in the presence of the Mayor, Dr Antonio Bufano, of the Municipal Councillor, Dr Mariangela Convertini, and several other councillors and municipal councillors. The path crosses the countryside of Locorotondo and ends in Contrada Papariello, where the Venerable was born on 29 August 1898.

A statue depicting Salesian missionary Fr Convertini with children has been placed at the beginning of the bicycle path, and this too was inaugurated. It was inspired by the different images in Krishnagar, India, where the Venerable lived and worked for many years. The monument was blessed by Fr Stefano Bruno, Vicar of the city and parish priest of the San Giorgio Martire parish,  Fr Convertini's home parish.

The beginning of the bicycle path with the sculpture of the Venerable has the large square named after Antonio Mitriano, mayor of Locorotondo as its starting point. He was mayor in in the first half of the twentieth century. The square is located near the San Giorgio mother Church where the venerable was baptised.

Antonio Mitrano, mayor of Locorotondo, benefactor and figure of reference for the entire community of the time, received the first and oldest letter that has been preserved from the Venerable Convertini, dating back to 1927 and contained in the "Letters" epistolary, edited by Sister Grazia Loparco, FMA.

Even when his renowned winery suffered a financial crash that reduced him to poverty, Antonio Mitrano continued to support Fr Convertini, who had a continuous correspondence with him. Fr Convertini wrote about 80 letters and card so the mayor of Locorotondo Antonio Mitrano, but unfortunately only one of all this important correspondence has been preserved, which also provides a cross-section of local history.

The bike path project inaugurated in Piazza Mitrano also involved the renovation of a municipal building, the former Carabinieri barracks which has been transformed into a socio-cultural aggregation centre for minors, also named after Fr Francesco Convertini, but not yet opened – although already entrusted to a third sector body that will take care of it.
