Spain – Change for continuity: Spain’s Past Pupils gather in Barcelona for their National Assembly

06 June 2024

(ANS – Barcelona) – The annual Assembly of the Spanish Confederation of Past Pupils of Don Bosco took place in Barcelona from 31 May to 2 June, allowing all the participants to see at first hand the traces left by Don Bosco in the city. In addition to increasing the number of participants, we had a considerable number of young people and we noted the increase in the number of women leading local associations of Past Pupils.

Hosted in the house of Martí Codolar, which celebrates its 75th anniversary, on Friday we had the presence of Fr Joan Lluís Playà, delegate of the Rector Major for the Salesian Family, who gave us the Good Night. In addition, representatives of both inspectors welcomed us to such a special meeting and we were accompanied throughout the meeting by the world president Bryan Magro.

The confederal president Diego Aragón gave a report on activities in 2023-2024, on behalf of all his Council, highlighting the great work in the animation and closeness with the local associations, an efficient and effective economic management, and an exponential increase of young people, thanks to the support coming from European funds, and the great work of the National Youth Coordinator team, presented by Anna Jordina Llorens.

The formative theme of the Assembly was given by Dr Sergio Rodríguez López-Ros, author of the book "Gastini - The Poet of Valdocco", who illustrated the figure of the founder of the past pupils movement, his fundamental values and the main milestones of a life dedicated to following Don Bosco and supporting him in many of his endeavours. At the end of the presentation, the campaign to raise funds for the monument that is being carried out in Valdocco was presented.

The work of our group continued with various topics, moderated by Mr Ángel Gudiña, in which a large number of participants took part. The reports of the Regional Federations and of the World Confederation, the presentation of the economic situation of the National Confederation and of new tools of associative management, which will modernize our task of animation, are worth mentioning. There was also time for our magazine Don Bosco en España, the Juan Bosco Siglo XXI Foundation and the formation department.

Saturday afternoon was dedicated to discovering the traces left by Don Bosco in the city of Barcelona, visiting Can Prats and the whole area of Sarriá, and the Church of the Sacred Heart in Tibidabo, with exceptional guides in all places. Everyone was introduced to the figure of the Venerable Dorotea de Chopitea, a great benefactor of the Salesians in the city, and a Catholic committed to the most disadvantaged youth of her time, whose cause for beatification is being promoted by the Past Pupils in Barcelona.

The celebration of Corpus Christi on Sunday, as Fr. Samuel Segura, SSM Vice-Provincial, indicated to us, put us in tune with making the sacrament of presence in society our hallmark as Past Pupils. In addition, we were able to thank and say goodbye to our dear delegate Fr Eusebio Martínez, who after four years accompanying with dedication, closeness and kindness, the Past Pupils of Spain, will finish his mandate due to his new obedience.

Thanks to all those who have made an unrepeatable meeting possible, especially to the Federation Mare de Déu de la Mercé, led by Joan Yebras and Josep Mascaró, who made us all feel like exceptional guests in Barcelona.
