Jerusalem – Unity in Diversity: Celebrating the Spirit of Pentecost in Jerusalem

20 May 2024

(ANS – Jerusalem) – The Pentecost Vigil under the auspices of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem was held in the Basilica of St Stephen adjacent to the renowned Ecole Biblique in Jerusalem on 18 May 2024. It was a profound and unifying event, bringing together a diverse assembly of Catholics from the Latin rite and other communities in communion with the Catholic Church.

The Salesian community in Jerusalem consisting of young Salesians in theological formation, was privileged to be the organisers of the entire evening. Bishop William Shomali, who presided at the vigil service was accompanied by heads and representatives of other churches.

With the characteristic Salesian style of lively music and refreshing creativity, the Pentecost vigil displayed true unity in diversity. There were biblical readings, intercessory prayers and hymns in various languages to demonstrate not only the richness of the cultural heritage of the Holy Land but also evincing the diversity of people who work and serve here.

In his message, Bishop Shomali stressed that harmony can be found in diversity, a concept he illustrated by juxtaposing the biblical stories of Babel and Pentecost. He recounted the Tower of Babel story from Genesis, where humanity's attempt to build a tower to the heavens led to confusion and division as languages multiplied. This led to the breakdown of communication and created discord. He contrasted this with the Pentecost event, where the Holy Spirit enabled the apostles to speak in various tongues, allowing people from different nations to understand God's message. This event symbolised unity and mutual understanding through the Holy Spirit. He remarked that while diversity in language, culture, and traditions can often seem like a source of division, yet, through the Holy Spirit these differences can be transcended to create a harmonious whole. The Spirit fosters communication and communion, which is inclusive and peaceful.

This annual event in the Church of Jerusalem – the Pentecost vigil – brings together the Christian faithful, who with a strong faith, witness by their lives the presence of the church in Jerusalem and the Holy Land. They pray for peace and justice – the gifts of the Spirit - to return to the land where Jesus lived during his earthly sojourn.
