Ukraine – Salesian solidarity by Missioni Don Bosco and VIS

04 April 2024

(ANS – Lviv) – From 1 to 7 April, a delegation from Missioni Don Bosco in Turin, and the Salesian NGO known as the Volontariato Internazionale per lo Sviluppo (VIS) will be in Ukraine, to show how close Salesians are to volunteers and the population in the country still under fire from Russian military action. This is solidarity that has been expressed since the outbreak of the war, in coordination with other Italian Salesian bodies of international solidarity, now being evaluated and with a new approach.

The President, Fr Daniel Antúnez, SDB, and photojournalist Ester Negro are part of the expedition on behalf of Missioni Don Bosco; and on behalf of the VIS, President Michela Vallarino, Fr Luca Barone of the Executive Committee, a member of the Salesian Headquarters in Rome, and Alberto Livoni and Riccardo Giannotta.

"It is difficult for us to share the feelings of these first days" Fr Barone told ANS. Listing the different situations the delegation came into contact with, Fr Barone indicated some of the first and strongest impressions received: "The Salesian family home in Lviv, with  children, most of them war orphans, the football team with mutilated soldiers and the testimony of Konstiantyn, their captain, who lost his leg at the front and who seeks psychological rehabilitation with and for his family in sport; the cemetery created from scratch for deceased soldiers, all very young, with hundreds and hundreds of graves decorated with the blue yellow flag; the normality of people's daily lives between one alarm and another in a continuous contrast; the visit to ‘Mariapolis’, the container village that for a year and a half has taken in about 950 displaced people, of whom more than 300 are children..."

The mission of the Salesian delegation continues over these days, and depending on the situation, it will then be able to reach Kiyv to bring solidarity to the Salesian community operating in that area of the country.

Fr Barone and Fr Antúnez, for their part, seek opportunities fro communion and fraternity each day with the confreres who experience this situation of constant emergency daily, without losing the spirit of trust and determination typical of the Salesian charism.
