(ANS – Recife) – “The Salesian Family of North-east Brazil is celebrating! Don Bosco is among us!" In this spirit, the Salesians of Recife announce the beginning of the visit of Cardinal Ángel Fernandez Artime, Rector Major of the Salesians of Don Bosco, to the St Aloysius Gonzaga Province of Brazil-Recife (BRE).

The 10th Successor of Don Bosco landed in the afternoon of Tuesday, 30 January, at Recife International Airport, and was warmly welcomed by the Superior of BRE, Fr Francisco Inácio, by the Salesians and by the novices from the Salesian São Sebastião Novitiate in Jaboatão dos Guararapes. The first welcome was already marked by joy, enthusiasm and traditional music from the northeast of the country.

After leaving the airport, the Rector Major was received in the Provincial House by all the Rectors in the Province and by collaborators at the Provincial Centre who had been waiting for this moment for months, and for this reason they also actively participated in the preparations for the reception of the Rector Major.

Then came the moment of the First Solemn Vespers of the Liturgical Feast of St John Bosco, in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Recife. The liturgy was presided over by Cardinal Fernández Artime, with the participation of the Salesians of the northeast and numerous representatives of the various groups of the Salesian Family, such as, among others, the Association of Mary Help of Christians (ADMA), the Salesian Cooperators, the Past Pupils of Don Bosco and Canção Nova.

The Rector Major's animation visit to the BRE Province will last until next Sunday, 4 February, and has as its main objectives the celebration of Don Bosco, participation in the Dedication of the Church of the Good Jesus in Juazeiro do Norte, and the posthumous assignment of the qualification of Salesian Cooperator to the Servant of God Father Cícero Romão Batista (1844-1934).
