RMG – Modernisation of the ISS and ACSSA site: an initiative to preserve and make history more accessible

06 December 2023

(ANS– Rome) – The new website of the Salesian Historical Institute (ISS) and the Salesian History association (ACSSA) has been online since Thursday 30 November. The project to create the new site took several months and required much research to ensure that all the information was presented in an objective, intuitive and easily accessible way.

The ISS and ACSSA website – which remains at the same address as before: https://iss-acssa.org/ – is a space for great collaboration, knowledge, research and archiving of productions relevant to the Salesian Family and society as a whole. Therefore, it must be able to communicate all the importance of the Institute and the Association, the history, work teams, actions, events and news, as well as all published research.

A website with a modern design, in fact, can have a greater impact, already visually, on the public, and thus make them fully understand everything that the Institute and the Association represent.

The curators of this service have thus listed the advantages of the process carried out:

–    Digital preservation: the modernisation of the site has served not only to update the aesthetics, but also to implement technologies that guarantee the digital preservation of documents and historical archives.

–    Global accessibility: The new site structure has been designed with a focus on global accessibility. Visitors from different parts of the world will be able to explore the rich historical content in an intuitive and engaging way. “A better browsing experience for the user makes browsing more intuitive and accessible – an important element to attract and retain visitors” explained Robert Macus and Giselli Ribeiro, from the team that updated the site.

–    Multi-channel integration: The modernisation group sought to integrate strategies such as creating search engine-optimised content and implementing interactive tools to engage the audience. “Search engines appreciate up-to-date and optimised websites. Modernisation not only improves the positioning in search results, but also facilitates the discovery of the site by a new audience interested in the activities of the Institute and the Association”, added Macus and Ribeiro.

–    Improved user experience: The new website has been developed with a user-centric approach, ensuring a better browsing experience. “With the increasing use of mobile devices, a modernised website needs to be responsive, adapting to different screen sizes. This ensures that information is accessible regardless of the device used, increasing convenience for users” the two specialists concluded.

Overall, the modernisation of the ISS and ACSSA website will not only provide an up-to-date online presence, but an initiative to ensure that the rich Salesian historical heritage is preserved, promoted and made accessible to present and future generations, ensuring its charismatic identity.

In addition, this modernisation will also open the doors to a greater impact of the ISS and ACSSA, to the involvement of the community and to the achievement of their institutional objectives. This is a fundamental step to ensure that the relevance and influence of the two institutions grow in line with the technological advances of contemporary society.
