Their participation in this process is the result of the proposal and orientations of Fr Miguel Ángel García Morcuende, General Councillor for Youth Ministry who, together with Fr Rafael Bejarano, Coordinator of Social Works for the Congregation, motivated the Provinces of Colombia to draw up a report on the situation of children and adolescents in the context of the armed conflict in Colombia after the signing of the Peace Agreements, guided by the guiding principles of the approach to Human Rights in the Salesian mission.
The work proposal resulted in a report sent by the Salesians of Colombia to the United Nations Human Rights Council, whose contribution strengthened the analysis of the state of Human Rights carried out by Colombian civil society. This action is a best practice that makes visible the role of the Salesian Congregation in the country, engages it directly in the agenda of promotion and defence of Human Rights and guides it in new ways to carry out an effective action of advocacy politics among those who plan the public policies of the States.
Furthermore, the involvement of Br Echavarría Zúñiga and Mrs Ardila Duarte in the UPR adds to the international advocacy agenda developed together with the Executive Secretary of Don Bosco International, Dr. Sara Sechi, at various NGOs that carry out advocacy activities in the institutional headquarters of the European Union in Brussels.
This experience constitutes a best practice that offers two fundamental lessons: firstly, the structuring of a pilot direction that can be replicated in the provinces and in the different areas of Salesian activity; secondly, the importance of strengthening advocacy activities by Salesian provinces in the area where their educative and pastoral proposal is implemented.
