(ANS – Guadalajara) – A Eucharistic celebration was held on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the foundation and consecration of the Province of Mexico-Guadalajara (MEG on Sunday, 24 September, in the church of Mary Help of Christians of Guadalajara, State of Jalisco. Just as 60 years earlier Fr José Luis González López, the first Provincial (from 1963 to 1969), presided on the same date and in the same place at the Eucharist for the inauguration of the Province, in the presence of Salesians, friends and benefactors, so, on this occasion, it was Fr Filiberto González Plasencia, the current Provincial, who presided over the celebration.

The Mass on 24 September took place in accordance with what was already celebrated on 30 August, which marked the 60th anniversary of the publication of the founding decree of the Province of Mary Help of Christians (GU) – now with the acronym MEG: "By virtue of the special faculty granted to us by the aforementioned rescript, we, Fr Renato Ziggiotti, Rector Major of the Society of Saint Francis de Sales, after carefully considering everything and with the consent of the Superior Chapter, ... canonically erect within the territory a new Province with the title of ‘B.M.V. Ausiliatrice’ (Turin, Italy. 30 August 1963)”.

The Eucharistic celebration featured the involvement of members of the Salesian Family, lay people and young people in the various works in MEG. After reading the Gospel, Fr Felipe Carranza, Vice-Provincial, recalled the origins and path of the GU Province and the great number of vocations that occurred at that time. Later, during the homily, Fr González stressed that the bond of unity of the Province is due to the "living" presence of God. "Today, the 24th of this month, we gather filially, like Don Bosco, in front of our mother, Mary Help of Christians, and we thank her for her protection. To Christ the King we offer our life and the mission shared between laity and consecrated persons "he added, citing the current patrons of MEG Province.

At the end, the Province was consecrated to Mary Help of Christians and, this time, also to Christ the King, "because since the foundation of the Province we belong to them, together with our Salesian confreres and the boys", Fr González said.

This Eucharistic celebration is part of the Province's process of gratitude and conversion, and was an opportunity for recognition and projection towards the future, which will be lived throughout the Jubilee year: during this time "we will ask for and seek, in particular, vocations of consecrated persons and lay people who will continue to make the Province more Salesian, for the glory of God and the salvation of souls, especially young people", explained the Provincial of MEG.

The celebration ended with an artistic exhibition, a convivial moment and messages of thanks and congratulations from those who were also Provincials of MEG: Bishop Héctor Guerrero, Bishop Emeritus of Mixes, Oaxaca; Bisahop Salvador Cleofás Murguía, Bishop of Mixes, Oaxaca; Fr Hugo Orozco, Regional Councillor for Interamerica, and the Rector Major Emeritus, Fr Pascual Chávez. Finally, the message sent by the Rector Major, Fr Ángel Fernández Artime, was also heard, which encouraged those present to continue working for the most needy young people in the area.
