Since the Salesians were unable to carry out the initial project of opening a clinic, due to the internal turmoil in the country, it was decided to change approach to providing health services. Salesian Missions funds, therefore, were used to send medicines to the most needy people.
Fr Victor Khun Myat, Provincial Economer in Myanmar, wanted to “express the deepest gratitude for the financial support that donors have provided to the poor living in our communities and in refugee camps in different parts of our country. Thanks to their generous support, we have provided healthcare to 500 people.”
In addition to the important medical support, the Salesian missionaries in Myanmar also take care of the children’s education, guaranteeing them the best equipment to continue their studies. Thanks to funding from Salesian Missions, 25 laptops were purchased to help students in their education and to facilitate the learning of basic computer skills. The school has set up the internet network and electrical system for a new computer room for a total of 300 students and has hired qualified staff for the course. The donation was sent in 2022.
"We just set up the computer room and the first group of young people started basic computer lessons" added Fr Victor.
After the pandemic and with the political instability of the country, many boys had dropped out of school. For this reason, the Salesians continue to work to get young people back to school, with the possibility of attending classes in computer science, mathematics and English.
"Computer skills are essential for today's students, to compete in the global economy" said Fr Timothy Ploch, interim director of Salesian Missions. “We are grateful to our donors who have allowed the Salesians in Myanmar to complete the computer classroom with new laptops for students.”
