The boys and girls gathered in Goma followed several modules focused on the Don Bosco Preventive System, group dynamics, social communication, catechesis, DIY, games, animation, care of creation and first aid. The sessions were facilitated by specialists from different fields, including men and women religious, doctors, journalists, communicators, educators and psychologists.
Fr Dieudonné Mutonkole Sande, SDB, Vice-Rector of the Salesian community in Ngangi, Goma, welcomed all those present and thanked them for their availability. He then encouraged them to be constant in their willingness to serve, to ensure the success of this edition of the Salesian Youth Games.
The 2023 edition of these games, in fact, has a series of particular characteristics to take into account, demanding good coordination and maximum care from everyone: most of the activities take place within the centre, given that the playing areas there are still occupied by the families of internally displaced people who have fled, since last November from the surroundings of Goma, due to the violence in the area. Moreover, as a consequence of this, many more boys and girls than usual are taking part in the games: almost 5,000 of them, about half of whom come from displaced families, and therefore need special attention.
The entire Salesian community at on Bosco Ngangi has been mobilsed to ensure the success of this activity, which, with a typically Salesian approach, focuses primarily on displaced children and young people, not forgetting children from the surrounding neighbourhoods.
The 2023 edition of the Salesian Youth Games at Don Bosco Ngangi began last Monday, 24 July, and will run until 20 August. The young people who participated in the training course are already fulfilling their promises and are dedicating themselves to supervising and accompanying the children entrusted to them.
