His appointment is due to the fact that on 1 July, the previous Superior of the Salesians in Angola, Fr Martin Lasarte, was appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Lwena. Currently, therefore, the ANG Vice-Province is under the guidance of the Vice-Superior, Fr Lucas Manuel Kabandje, who will guide it until Fr Sequeira Gutiérrez is installed.
This will probably take place next September, on a date fixed in agreement with the Regional Councillor for Africa-Madagascar, Fr Alphonse Owoudou.
With this appointment, the Rector Major also decided, again after consulting his Council, to elevate the Vice-Province of Angola to be a Province, starting from the day Fr Sequeira Gutiérrez is installed. He will therefore be the first Provincial of the new Province.
Son of Cristóbal Sequeira and Victoria Gutiérrez, Victor Luís Sequeira Gutiérrez was born on 22 March 1964, in Asunción, Paraguay. He attended the Salesian aspirantate in Ypacaraí in 1984, the prenovitiate in 1985 and finally the novitiate in La Plata, Argentina, in 1986. He made his first profession on 31 January 1987. His philosophy studies led him to São Paulo, Brazil, and to the Catholic University of Asunción.
From 1992 to 2020, he worked as a missionary in Angola, holding various positions: Economer of the Don Bosco house of formation in Luanda (1997-98), Rector of the Catholic Mission at Libolo (1998-2005), Rector and parish priest at Dondo (2005-11). From 2011 to 2014 he was the Rector of the Luanda Formation Centre and Deputy Director of the Institut Supérieur de Philosophie et Pédagogie Don Bosco in Luanda, now known as ISDB.
He has already been Superior of the Salesians in Angola for the six-year period from 2014-2020.
In November 2020 he was sent to Portugal to be part of the formation team for students of Theology in Lisbon, also carrying out a brief service as chaplain at the Medical Rehabilitation Centre in Alcoitão. Finally, from February 2023, he returned to Angola, where he had recently been appointed Rector and Parish Priest of the community at Lwena.
Fr Sequeira Gutiérrez is fluent in Spanish, Guarani, French, Italian and Portuguese.
“We send him our most sincere wishes of pastoral fruitfulness in his new responsibilities as Superior of the ANG Province” is the message shared by his confreres.
