One of the most important of these VETs is the Salesian San José Centre, located in the city of Salta. Since its opening eight years ago, this centre has trained more than 200 young people a year, consolidating its position as a benchmark in the region.
In a country affected by structural poverty and unemployment, where many people spend every day doing informal work, educational proposals like this become even more relevant. San José's educational offer, recognised by the Ministry of Education, includes a series of courses including Assembler of domestic electrical systems, Electricity in buildings, Assembler of domestic sanitary installations, Restorer and painter on construction sites, Assembler,Constructor of walls and ceilings in plasterboard, and Installer and designer of systems for the supply of electricity through solar photovoltaic energy.
Pedro Augusto Martinez, Director of the Salta VET, who was able to see the positive impact of these training and educational courses on the lives of young people, commented: “The knowledge acquired is remarkable, both technically and in human terms. The young people themselves are grateful and continue to be trained in the different technical specialities that the centre offers them.”
Currently, precisely because of the value of the courses and their recognised success, applications for enrolment in the San José VET courses have exceeded the work's possibilities.
For this reason, with the firm intention of carrying forward Don Bosco’s dream of offering a better future to young people, the "Mejorando nuestra casa educativa” (Improving our school) project was launched. This project aims to expand and give new features to classrooms, laboratories and other areas at the centre. In this way it will be possible both to accommodate a greater number of students and to improve the quality of training.
The impact of Salesian Vocational Training Centres on our young people is well known. In many cases they manage to complete their secondary education at the Centres. Through vocational training they are given a real opportunity for personal and professional development, breaking the cycle of poverty and opening the door to a future with greater opportunities. The work of the San José Centre and the other VET centres in the Argentine North Province reflects the commitment of the Salesian community and its vision of empowering young people through education and vocational training.
