Under the motto "Give it your best," the event, organized by the "Fundação Salesianos" and the Salesians of Évora, aimed to promote values such as teamwork, respect, solidarity, and sportsmanship among young people from different schools and youth centers of the Salesians of Don Bosco and the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians from around the country.
The organization of the competition also involved 150 volunteers, including pupils, their parents, guardians, and relatives, and about 100 people among teachers and school staff.
For the Director of the Salesians of Évora, Fr. Sebastião Coelho, the holding of this edition in the city is a source of great joy. "It was a beautiful event of conviviality, sports, and a life of values. It is also a family moment, which brought together the various houses of the Salesians and the FMA. And it is something very positive because the students prepare throughout the year with the expectation of participating in the National Salesian Games."
And about the meaning of the competition, the Salesian adds, "It's not about being the best, it's about giving your best, to the team, to the event, to the delegations."
On April 28, at 9 p.m., the Évora Sports Arena hosted the opening ceremony. The celebration also included speeches by the mayor of Évora, Carlos Pinto de Sá; the Vicar of the Province of Portugal (POR), Fr. João Chaves; Fr. Sebastião Coelho; and the director of Artisport of the Évora Salesians, Jorge Malarranha.
After the athletes and referees were sworn in, the stage at the multi-purpose venue was turned over to students from the host school for an opening performance that featured various choreographies.
The competitions then continued on April 29 and 30, starting at 9 a.m. In parallel, the organization planned a cultural program, with a walk at the end of the day on Saturday, a visit to some of the monuments of the city of Évora, and various entertainment activities at the premises of the Salesians of Évora, at the end of the competitions on Sunday.
A closing ceremony was held on Monday at 10 a.m., with the Eucharist and the awarding of prizes.
The first edition of the Salesian Games was held in Turin, Italy, in 1914, as part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Congregation. The event was a success and since then the Salesian Games have been held regularly in different countries, to promote the integration of young Salesians from different regions, encourage the practice of sports, and promote values such as friendship, solidarity, and fraternity.
In Portugal, the first edition of the National Salesian Games was held in 1992, in Mogofores. The event brought together the athletes and the educational-pastoral communities of the Salesians of Don Bosco and the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians in a family gathering of celebration and festivity, according to the particular Salesian style of education and evangelization.
