(ANS - Venice) - On Sunday, April 16, 2023, more than 6,000 people of all ages - and more than 6,500 if we count the 330 volunteers and 230 performers and companions of the guest folk groups - participated in the traditional Solidarity Walk "Su e Zo per i Ponti di Venezia, up and down the bridges of Venice" moving through the lanes and across the squares of the lagoon city with a thought turned to the Salesian mission of Quebrada Honda, Peru, the focus of the 2023 Solidarity Project of Su e Zo per i Ponti.

Sponsored by the City of Venice and organized by the Salesian NGO "TGS Eurogroup," the event replicated the success of past editions, confirming it as one of the most popular ones.

The Su e Zo Mass, which traditionally marks the beginning of the event, was celebrated at 8:30 a.m. in St. Mark's Basilica.

Then the starts began, marked every 15 minutes, between 9:30 and 11:00 a.m., at the same time in St. Mark's Square and at the Port of Venice, depending on the option made on the routes - the first, of 11 kilometers, with 42 bridges; and the second, more suitable for kindergartens and elementary schools, of 5.4 kilometers, with 19 bridges.

"An edition kissed by the sun," said Igino Zanandrea, General Manager of TGS Eurogroup, "So many people, thanks also to the beautiful day, decided to sign up today, for an initiative under the banner of togetherness and inclusion, with the important goal of solidarity addressed on two channels: the local area, with the delivery of contributions to participating schools, but also the support of the Salesian missions in the world."

Having exceeded the threshold of 100 entries, as many as eight schools, in fact, were awarded the "Don Dino Berti" Schools Prize, named after the Salesian priest who conceived the event. Those schools, therefore, will be awarded a voucher for the purchase of educational or sports materials. Each entrant was also given a collectible medal; while a special mention and a Murano glass prize also went to the Folk Groups that animated the event.

The event was also greeted by the President of the Veneto Region, Luca Zaia, who in his message clearly identified the purpose and meaning of the event: "My applause for an event that has become a traditional appointment of the Veneto spring. A walk that unites families, young and old, in an important moment of aggregation and friendship, to support Salesian missions around the world. This is truly an opportunity to get together to discover Venice by walking along its calli, promoting sustainable mobility that allows all participants to enjoy the architectural and cultural beauty of the city. Sport meets solidarity, beauty meets charity, and this is thanks to the commitment of the Social Promotion Associations and the Institutions involved in the organization of the event."

The next edition, the 44th, has already been set in motion by "TGS Eurogroup" together with the City of Venice for Sunday, April 14, 2024.
