Chile – Councilor for Southern Cone America Region visiting Salesian presences in Province of Magallanes

09 March 2023

(ANS - Punta Arenas) - The Regional Councilor for the America Southern Cone Region, Fr. Gabriel Romero, who is in Chile to carry out, on behalf of the Rector Major, the Extraordinary Visit to the Salesian Province "San Gabriel Archangel" (CIL), visited the Salesian works in the Province of Magallanes, near Punta Arenas and Puerto Natales, from 1 to 7 March.

On Thursday, March 2, Fr. Romero reached the Pastoral Educational Community (CEP) of "San José" secondary school in Punta Arenas. Warmly welcomed by the students, he offered them his Salesian "good morning" thought. Then, in the morning, he met with the center's managing team, representatives of the student center, and Salesian Youth Movement (SYM) groups. In the afternoon, he attended the teachers' council.

In each of these meetings he spoke with various representatives of CEP, obtaining different views and opinions on the mission of the secondary school and how it affects the local community.

In the following days, the Regional Councilor reached Puerto Natales where he met with the city's Salesian Family at the "Monseñor Fagnano" high school. "I'm very happy to be here with you. The purpose of this visit is to get to know the Salesian reality of the Chilean Province, that is to travel all over the country, and for that we start now from the south, from the Magallanes area. I have already visited Punta Arenas, but I have to go back there to get to know the other schools and parishes, and now I am here in Puerto Natales," Fr. Romero said, introducing himself.

"The intention is to keep moving north to visit Salesian communities, schools and parishes, talk to people, educators, Directors, some students and bring some impressions or comments to the Rector Major," he continued further.

"In a sense, my task is to act as a bridge between the Rector Major and the Salesian headquarters and every community in the American South, and I'm also here to get to know this school and the reality that you live," he concluded.

During the day, Fr. Romero visited the school premises and had meetings with the school's director team, student center and SYM youth.

On Monday, March 6, back in Punta Arenas, Fr.  Romero participated in the special Salesian "good morning" at the Punta Arenas "Don Bosco" Institute for the official start of the school year. On the occasion, the Regional Councilor for South Cone America also addressed his message, pointing out to the students the importance of Jesus for their lives.

Later in the day, he then dialogued with the center's Board of Directors, with whom he took up the challenges for this new period. He then met with members of the student center, SYM assistants, and Sacramental Pastoral Care Catechists, who commented on their feelings, experiences, and motivations for participating. Finally, he met with Salesian educators, with whom he delved into pedagogical work and motivation to educate.
