In one of the poorest neighborhoods of Malabo, the capital of Equatorial Guinea, the Sons of Don Bosco are active, leading a parish, animating an oratory and a youth center, but above all two schools, primary and secondary, and a vocational center.
In this vocational center, the DON BOSCO IN THE WORLD Foundation, the body of the Salesian Congregation whose purpose is the promotion, support, and development of Salesian Works and Missions in the world, carries out an important project. It is a program aimed at very young mothers, particularly all those who have dropped out of school because of early pregnancies, they were repudiated by their family of origin, or with children not recognized by their paternal family.
In fact, the Salesian community in Malabo operates in an especially discriminatory situation against girls who become pregnant and young mothers; here the law prohibits these girls from attending school.
Without the opportunity to educate themselves, to learn a trade, they consequently remain trapped in a system that stigmatizes and punishes them, rejects and alienates them, without the possibility of integrating into society and being able to aspire to decent work.
In this particularly complex context, the Salesians have activated the project called: "Vocational Training for Young Mothers in Malabo," which involves 30 teenagers who are pregnant or have newborn children, who thus have the opportunity to access training programs differentiated according to the needs of each of them.
