(ANS - Elche) - Last Oct. 3, Carlos González, mayor of the city of Elche, in the Valencian Autonomous Community, informed the Rector of the local Salesian work, Fr. Miguel Gambín, SDB, that the City Council decided to award the city's Silver Medal to the Sons of Don Bosco on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of their Vocational Training Center’s creation, and in recognition of their long-standing work on behalf of the education of the city's youth, especially in the field of vocational training. The award was then presented to the Salesians on October 9 in the city's Grand Theater.

"This acknowledgement is an official expression of something that is fluctuating in the air," commented Fr. Gambín. "Salesian work is well known in Elche and, throughout its 50-year history, has had a positive influence on the city. In most companies, there are past pupils who fondly remember the years they spent in the classrooms and workshops."

"This recognition should be shared with all the people who have been involved in this project of Salesian work in Elche, starting with the Salesian pioneers of the first, difficult years, to all the teachers, administrative and service staff, and the many friends we have in Elche society. The celebration of the 50th anniversary of the existence of the institute, dedicated to St. Joseph the Craftsman, was a good time to remember this lived history," he added further.

Fr. Gambín explains that Elche has always been a place where Salesians have felt at home, both for the welcome they have received and for their collaboration on all projects. "This is a privileged moment to express our gratitude for such generosity and enthusiasm, and to renew our educational commitment to the youth of Elche, both in the field of vocational training and in other areas of education. For our part, we will continue to provide quality, innovation, creativity, and education to people, which goes far beyond just formation in technical subjects. We will continue to break new ground, with the help of God and Mary Help of Christians," he finally concluded.

At the awards ceremony, the City Council presented ten Bimillennial Silver Medals to people and organizations that have been able to promote the values of the city. The Vocational Training Center of the Salesians of Elche - St. Joseph Craftsman received the recognition for providing its services for half a century. On the occasion, Fr. Gambín took the stage accompanied by teacher Miguel Ángel Morales and student Lucia Ramírez, and said, "The recognition is extremely meaningful at this time because it means building bridges in a polarized world, while beyond ideological differences we must bet on a more fraternal world."
