For years Taranto has lived with different issues related to culture, economy, the environment and education. The Salesian charism has always been present and of considerable benefit to the city, but in recent times the city has experienced the crisis even worse than elsewhere. A large number of young people are neither studying nor working - according to the local Chamber of Commerce the number has now reached 60%.
The FabLab project is being started in response to this situation. From September onwards a new generation laboratory will give a growing number of young people access to various technologies, such as, for example, printers, 3D scanners and programming languages for "Arduino" cards. This will allow them to develop their creativity and to achieve practical results in an atmosphere of exchange and sharing of ideas.
Various activities will be on offer: workshops in educational robotics based on the "Arduino" or "LEGO" approach, the use of open source programming, 3D modelling, and so on.
Workshops for different age groups will be aimed at all young people aged between 13 and 30 years, with priority given to young people who are not studying and do not have a job. At first the scheme will be confined to those who are out of school, but they hope to find funds to expand the project.
The project will be managed by the members of the Casa Don Bosco association supported by the parish priest of the St John Bosco parish, Fr Ercole Cinelli, the Provincial of the Salesians in Southern Italy, Fr Pasquale Cristiani and the Salesian Foundation for Social Action – SCS to which the association has been affiliated since 2014.
