Madagascar – Solidarity and prevention to help the needy and protect against infections

18 September 2020

(ANS - Antananarivo) - Madagascar is also still struggling with the Covid-19 pandemic. Not only because the new coronavirus has infected 15,925 people with 216 victims in the country, but also because the lack of international tourists due to the blocking of flights and travel has generated enormous problems for the tourism industry and all the related activities it generates. Faced with this situation, the Salesians have worked out a detailed plan to help, as far as possible, the people most in need, starting with those closest to their environments.

The Sons of Don Bosco have been present in the great “Red Island” since 1981. Today their presence is articulated in a Vice-Province dedicated to Mary Immaculate with 11 houses. From the “Notre Dame de Clairvaux” center in Ivato, on the outskirts of the capital, Antananarivo, the Salesians issued a report on the support they have been offering.

In the first place, even if due to the closure of the schools the teaching work is very limited, the Sons of Don Bosco are continuing to pay the salaries of employees regularly, and indeed, in consideration of the current economic situation, they have distributed a one-off bonus to them. Also, resident workers forced to remain in the Center despite the restrictions are granted a salary increase of around 15%.

Thinking of the students and their families, the religious of the Ivato center distributed a package with 8 kg of rice, 2 kg of dried vegetables, and a bar of soap to all the students. Each week they also distribute another package containing 5 kg of rice and 1.5 kg of dried legumes to final-year students - 85 young people - when they return home at the weekend. And a second distribution of rice and dried vegetables has already begun to all the center's students forced to stay at home.

A similar service, with a small package of rice and dried legumes, is also given to the students of the oratory recovery school. And in the cases of greatest difficulty they have come to know about - for example, when both parents of the children have been left without income - the Salesians have also given cash aid.

From the point of view of prevention, moreover, in the center of Ivato, the health provisions are being strictly observed: soap and water are present in many areas of the center, masks are made available and social distance is maintained in common areas such as the classrooms, the refectory, the study room and the dormitory.
