(ANS - Florence) - Don Bosco was at home in Florence: from 1865 to 1887 he went there 23 times. A visit to the Tuscan capital was therefore a must for the one who is the successor of Don Bosco today, Fr Ángel Fernández Artime. Yesterday, 29 May, the Rector Major paid his first visit to the two Salesian centres in the city: Mary Immaculate in the city centre, and San Giusto in the suburb of Scandicci.

The Rector Major was accompanied by his secretary, Fr Horacio López. They went first to the Community of Mary Immaculate. Where they were welcomed by the Superior of the District of Central Italy, Fr Leonardo Mancini, and the Rector of the Community, Fr Adriano Bregolin, former Vicar of the Rector Major from 2003 to 2014.

Fr Á.F. Artime then presided at the Eucharistic celebration for the Solemnity of Corpus Christi. In his homily he invited the parish community to follow the example of Jesus and to take three attitudes: “take what you have and what you are, even if it is very little, like the five loaves and two fish; bless God for the gifts you receive and open your hearts to mercy; and finally give, give of yourself to feed the many people of today who are hungry for bread, accommodation, tenderness, listening, and friendship."

After a simple and fatherly meeting with the Salesian Family in Florence, where Fr Á.F. Artime spoke of "the relevance of the Salesian charism in the world today", the visit continued in the afternoon at the centre in Scandicci, an area with a big number of families and young people. Here in the suburbs the simplicity and warmth of the living presence of Don Bosco today is very evident.
