The foundation was officially initiated on April 27, 2016, and already this week it inaugurated some of the projects already executed though it in some of the schools. In order to "not close yet another Catholic school" and to strengthen the quality of education of those schools that are already active, on Tuesday, May 24th the Salesian Cardinal opened some Halls at the ''Don Bosco Social and Educational Campus", which provides initial and primary education in area of Manga. The school is attended by about 400-500 children from the low-income economic strata of the society.
The school belongs to the "Fundación Sophia", a non-profit organization linked to the Archdiocese of Montevideo, which aims to improve education in the poor neighborhoods of the Uruguayan capital, through innovative educational methods, implementation of improvement plans and promotion of educational pursuit for everyone. "Another purpose of the Foundation” - continued the Cardinal, “is to improve the educational and pastoral quality of schools in poor neighborhoods, and this is precisely the motive behind the implementation at the Don Bosco Social and Educational Campus."
The latest of institutes sponsored by the foundation are: "Santa Bernardita" (St.Bernedette), in the Borro area, and "Cristo Divino Obrero” (Divine Christ the Worker), near the Grotto of Lourdes, both belonging to the Priests of the Sacred Heart founded by Léon Dehon. The Foundation, presently consists of eight institutions and has taken up further interest in developing the schools in the rest of the country.
"Graduation possibilities via the schools in the archdiocese, is an example that, if you want, you can" said Cardinal Sturla.
