Brazil – Evangelizing Amid the Challenges of Amazonian Life
Brasilia, Brazil – March 2025 – Despite the difficulties caused by the flooding of Amazonian rivers, including blocked roads and fallen trees, over 90 Achuar youth leaders gathered from March 25 to 29 in the Achuar community of Anas for the 4th Formation and Evangelization Meeting. During the event, Salesian missionary Fr. Rogger Valdivia Hidalgo reflected on the Gospel of Mark. Achuar permanent deacon Puanch Mukuin Mukuin spoke on synodality and the Amazon, while Deacons Yuran Saant and Timias Uwiti led a discussion on the theme of the 2025 Strenna and its meaning. The retreat offered participants a chance to renew their spiritual lives, especially through the Sacrament of Reconciliation, received for the first time in four months. “They felt the need for reconciliation in order to continue inspiring and guiding their communities,” Fr. Valdivia noted. The gathering reaffirmed the indigenous communities’ commitment to their faith and culture, highlighting the importance of such formative spaces amidst the challenges of Amazonian life.
