Malta – Preserving Cultural Heritage: The Responsibility of Salesian Communities

03 April 2025

Sliema, Malta – April 2025 – The Salesians of the Malta Vice Province (MLT) are preparing to celebrate the completion of the "Preservation Project" for the San Filippo Library/Archive, led by Fr. Joe Cini, SDB. He explained the status of the project -that the volunteers involved are currently reviewing digitized data "to improve research accessibility and ensure the integrity of  documents." In recent months, as part of the project, the Salesians of Malta have welcomed numerous visitors who share a passion for cultural preservation. Among them was Professor Gaetano Malandrino from the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara, Tuscany, Italy. His expertise was invaluable in identifying engravings on book covers and providing in-depth insights into different types of paper and bookbinding techniques. Another significant visit was from a group of collaborators working with Project Director Ms. Carmen Rossiter. These collaborators were experts in various fields like archiving, libraries, education, and history and they engaged in a stimulating exchange of knowledge and experiences. This innovative project highlights the vital responsibility of every Salesian community in preserving the cultural and historical heritage entrusted to them. Education extends far beyond the classroom—it flourishes through art, literature, and history. By safeguarding these treasures,  the past is not only honoured, but invaluable resources are also conserved and passed on to the future generations.
