Solomon Islands – Opening of SYM activities, Tetere

05 March 2024

Tetere, Solomon Islands – February 2024 – The Don Bosco institute in Tetere witnessed a large and well-attended event that took place from 23 to 25 February and brought together more than 250 young people. It was the opening of the annual activities of the Salesian Youth Movement. During the first day, participants joined the Way of the Cross, and then moved around the courtyard to take part in different games and activities. Fr Robinson Parappilly, Rector of Don Bosco Tetere, officially opened the Oratory, lighting a large bonfire. The second day was dedicated to the study of the Rector Major's Strenna 2024 and to moments of exchange on the dream at nine years of age. Young people were then asked to reflect on two questions: What are the modern wolves that destroy the church and society? And what are the tools we need to adopt to destroy these wolves and build our dreams? In group discussions, young people described gambling, alcoholism, drug addiction, excessive screen time, indifference and dependence on mobile games as "wolves", all factors that hinder the fulfilment their dreams. In contrast to these factors, Fr Parappilly urged those present to dream, citing illustrious examples of "dreamers" such as Don Bosco, Pope Francis and Martin Luther King. On the final day, then, the young people participated in a lively Eucharistic celebration, before taking part in games and competitions.
