Chile - Inclusive Education and Non-Discrimination Week for the Salesians at Talca

Talca, Chile - November 2023 - The educational community at the Salesian Educational Centre in Talca raised awareness of the importance and value of diversity, emphasising inclusive education and non-discrimination, throughout the week of 6 to 10 November. Under the motto "We are all different, but in this house we grow together", activities sought to raise awareness among students, teachers and teaching assistants about the reality of people with different abilities. Three workshops on strategies for dealing with situations of emotional and behavioural disregulation were developed: a dialogue on Autism Spectrum Disorder for educational assistants; a speech therapy workshop on voice care for school leaders; and a psychology workshop for parents. The Teletón Foundation organised a workshop for pre-school and basic education pupils, where children participated in recreational and educational activities. In the reflection shared with the educational community in the Good Morning Prayer, teachers Francisca Núñez from the South Campus and Sofía Sánchez from the North Campus referred to the meaning of the concepts of education and inclusion, emphasising that both are directly related, meaning that "everyone, regardless of how they are or where they come from, has the right to receive a quality education and to be treated with respect". An emotional moment was the testimony of a deaf CEST past pupil who shared his difficulties, joys and gratitude for the support he received at the Salesian school. The week of activities culminated with students sharing suggestions on how to be more inclusive during recess on both campuses.
