East Asia-Oceania – October 2023 – For the first time, on October 11, musicians and composers from the East Asia-Oceania Region met through Zoom with the General Councillor for Social Communication, Fr Gildasio Mendes. The event was attended by music enthusiasts from East Timor, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines and Thailand. The General Councillor shared with the group the objectives of the meeting, namely, to meet composers in the Salesian Family, learn about their works, create a worldwide network of musicians and composers and collect all the songs in order to publish them and include them in a collection for the use of the Salesian Family. During the event, some of those present performed, showcasing their artistic talents. Fr Gildasio Mendes, also a composer, encouraged the group to grow and promised them that he will inform the Rector Major, Fr Ángel Fernández Artime, about this new and interesting development in the field of Communication.
