India - Learning people's language and culture to reach their hearts
Guwahati, India – July 2023 – Following in the footsteps of Salesian missionaries who learned the languages and cultures of Northeast India to bring the Good News and development among the people, the Salesian Guwahati Province, India (ING) organized three weeks of bilingual learning for young Salesians and prenovices from 3 to 24 July. The young Salesians and the prenovices from of Guwahati thus carried out a professional course in the two main languages, Karbi and Bodo, which are very widespread in the Province. Fr Joseph Teron, ING Vice-Provincial, organised the Karbi course, being a native speaker. Cleric Silbison Borgoyari, on the other hand, took care of the one in Bodo, for the prenovices. The prenovices also had training in computer science and language learning through the language laboratory. Students of the Bodo language had the opportunity to interact with the rural population, as their prenovitiate is attached to a parish in a rural setting. Meanwhile, those who learned the Karbi language were able to interact with students and young people studying in the city of Guwahati and had field experiences visiting people in their villages.
