DR Congo - Salesian Mission Day in the valley of Kafubu

23 March 2023

Kafubu, DR Congo - March 2023 - The Mission Circles in the city of Lubumbashi celebrated Salesian Mission Day a few weeks ago. In a different style, but with just as much enthusiasm, this same day was celebrated in the valley of Kafubu, where young Salesians from the Kansebula postnovitiate animate several missionary groups in the surrounding villages. Thus, on Sunday, 19 March, 85 young missionaries from Kanawena, Kambikila, Kisaka, Kansebula, and Kafubu (Kwesu parish and high school) walked about 7 km from Kafubu to the "Main" farm in Kilobelobe. There they attended a lecture-debate on the day's theme, "Care for Creation - Our Mission." The speaker, Naomie Mbelu, a young student of Geography and Environment and an active member of the "Laudato Sì" Movement, invited those present to learn more about nature in order to take better care of it. She was very matter-of-fact, urging young people not to waste water, to respect trees, not to scatter plastic bags and bottles in nature, and to use paper with moderation and a sense of responsibility. To move from theory to practice, the whole group went to a deforested area to plant 100 or so trees. The young people then returned to the farm where Sunday Mass was celebrated in a beautiful green setting. They offered to the Lord the fruit of the earth and the labor of men. They promised to behave in an environmentally friendly way, to talk to friends and neighbors about what can be done to safeguard nature, and not to hesitate to let elected politicians in the region know that the environment concerns them.
