Can you introduce yourself ?
I am Quang Qui Nguyen Thomas belonging to the Salesian Province of Vietnam. I have finished my studies philosophy at the post-novitiate in Dalat, Vietnam. I am glad to embark on this missionary journey and start my life anew.
What inspired you to make this choice to become a missionary?
The desire of going as a missionary started after hearing the stories of the many missionaries who returned to Vietnam. They shared with me all their adventures and joys, difficulties and challenges. I said to myself, “why not me”, and I made this request to opt to be part of this 154th Salesian Missionary Expedition.
Are you happy about the place where you are going? Have you any fears and inhibitions about the new place, culture and people?
I am very glad and enthusiastic about the place where I am going, to the United Kingdom. Obviously, I have some worries about the challenges that may arise due to the cultural differences, people, customs etc, but I am optimistic that I will overcome all these and give my best to the young people and for the growth of the Salesian Mission.
How did your family members, friends and confreres react when you told them about your missionary vocation?
My family, friends and confreres have always supported, encouraged and prayed for me. I feel that they are with me in this decision of mine and their prayers will sustain me in my missionary life in the United Kingdom.
What are your plans and dreams about your missionary life?
I have no big dreams, except the simple desires to make myself as effective, competent and skillful for the new mission. I will learn and make every effort to understand and imbibe all that is necessary for my mission in the United Kingdom.
Have you in mind any model of some great missionaries whose style and life you want to follow?
My role model is Don Bosco. He has been a great missionary in proclaiming Christ to the young people, and doing everything for their empowerment and betterment. He overcame all difficulties with great determination, patience and faith and he will be my model for my missionary journey. Like him, I would like to also say, “Give me souls, and take away the rest”.
What is your message for young people about missionary choice and vocation?
My message for the young people is to tell them to be always ready and daring to do good to others, without calculating or counting the costs. I want to tell the young people whom I am going to encounter, “You wait there, I will be coming to you soon, and give the best of me for you and for your welfare.”
