The important question for us Salesians is not therefore whether we should be on the social networks, but how to be present in them without compromising our identity as consecrated persons.
Social networks are a space that potentially offers many possibilities and responds to the needs that people have: the need to meet, to bond with others, friendship, communication ... It is true that there can also be dangers such as vanity and narcissism. The Internet is a world of paradox that reflects the best and worst of ourselves.
Speaking of social networks Pope Francis highlights a profound concept, which is the building of the "culture of encounter". Far from being an abstract idea, this is the proposal of a new way of living and acting in relation to others.
Social networks cannot be understood as a parallel universe to the "real world"; for us they should be thought of as a dimension that reflects our life experience, our beliefs and our faith.
A Christian and especially a Salesian must not lose their identity on the network. They must be what they claim to be, without fear or ambiguity. Their authenticity and their experience of life are the best gift they can offer to young people on the network.
For Salesians the network is important. Through it they bear witness to joy, as they educate, guide and evangelize.
The network is a space that allows us to support each other. What is said there will encourage and will definitely help the people who are in our circle of friends and this will create a multiplier effect.
What is required of a Salesian is to be brave in communicating. Now is the time for courageous people who stake their whole lives on their beliefs. There must be a realistic and positive communication style.
