04 April 2016

(ANS - Havana) - "On 4 April we begin this important event of the Centenary Year of the presence and mission of the Salesians in the Antilles, and especially in our beloved Cuban soil," writes the Delegate for the Salesian Family in Cuba, Fr Wilgen Cancio Alvarez.

The Salesian Family, together with the children, adolescents and young people "offers to God their great gratitude for giving us in Don Bosco a model to follow; so we can continue through this wonderful charism to serve the Church in Cuba, this great work on behalf of so many who have gone through our houses and our playgrounds. All of us are proud to be Salesians, to be nourished and raised in this spirituality, through the presence, assistance, trust, closeness and affection of every Salesian educator" continues Fr Cancio Alvarez.

"These 100 years will be an opportunity to remember all the Salesians who have given their lives for Salesian Cuba, those who filled our courtyards with their voices, games, chat and walks; those who took care of our churches in order that this great family might be able to celebrate the faith; those who were not discouraged in the most difficult moments because they knew everything they did made sense and was part of a mission, and they remained faithful this mission."

The Salesian Family is committed to living in a distinctive manner, ensuring a lifetime commitment to the style of Don Bosco. "Although fears, doubts, apathy, suspicion and prejudice often accompany us, preventing us from making the leap to the Kingdom and doing the right things with joy and optimism (...) as a family, and with the intercession of the Salesian saints, we keep singing of the great things God does for those who place their hope in him who never disappoints."

Meanwhile, in view of the centenary, in Santa Clara, the youngest Salesian work in Cuba, where the Servant of God José Vandor lived and worked, in the past weekend several initiatives were implemented, including the projection of the documentary on the Salesian presence in Cuba "En Buena Tierra", made by the communication workshop in "Studio Vandor".

Because of the Centenary it has already been announced by the Provincial of the Antilles, Fr Francisco Batista, that the Rector Major will visit Cuba in 2017, and in particular will be in Camagüey on 30 January.
