Thousands of People from all the neighbouring countries come to see this traditional festival in the city of Cusco. They spend the night on the streets, and boulevards, in the rain and cold. This year as every year, the Salesian House comes to the aid of children and families, bringing them gifts, food and treats. It is tradition that the Salesian Family participates in this celebration to support the families who come from neighbouring provinces to sell their herbs, foods and crafts. On the one hand, this Cusco festival has become a celebration in which works of art of great value are exhibited. On the other hand, it has become a means of survival for thousands of very poor people who come from the highlands. During the day they sell the few things they have brought to the city. Many institutions and families take turns during the Christmas season to give them a bit of food, shelter from the cold and even a place to spend the cold nights that usually come to several degrees below zero.
During the Christmas holiday season thousands of families sleep on the streets, covered only by plastic. Aware of this harsh reality, the Salesians take to the streets on the night of 23 December to offer them a Christmas gift.
It is an opportunity to convey love and affection to those most in need.
