Brazil – The Meruri Community Celebrates the Opening of the Holy Door on Indigenous Boe-Bororo Land
Meruri, Brazil – March 2025 – On the morning of Sunday, March 9, the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, located in the indigenous village of Meruri (MT), celebrated the opening of the Holy Door in its parish church. The ceremony was led by Fr. Ângelo Cesar Cenerino, SDB, in the presence of the Boe-Bororo community.
As part of the Catholic Church's Jubilee, the rite strengthened the connection between Christian spirituality and the traditions of the indigenous people. Founded by Salesian missionaries, the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish has played a vital role in evangelization and supporting indigenous peoples in the region. Since 1902, the mission has promoted the integration of faith and culture through education, healthcare, and the defense of territorial rights.
The opening of the Holy Door represents a moment of renewal in the journey of faith. A traditional practice in Catholic Jubilees, this act symbolizes divine mercy and invites the faithful to conversion. In Meruri, the celebration reinforced the identity of the Bororo community and the Salesians’ ongoing missionary commitment to the region.
