Madrid, Spain - January 2025 - The shrine of Mary Help of Christians of Atocha has unveiled a very special monument in honour of Don Bosco. Children, young people, faithful and Salesians gathered in the courtyard at the shrine to celebrate the arrival of the statue. The Atocha shrine in Madrid commissioned Martín Lagares, an artist and Salesian past pupil, to create a very special sculpture. In it we can see Don Bosco with a child ‘to whom he shows the house, Don Bosco tells him to come in, to go to church where he will be very happy,’ says Fr Iñaki Lete, parish priest of the shrine. This monument also holds the relics of three of the most important figures in Salesian history. ‘At the bottom of the pedestal are the relics of St John Bosco, St Dominic Savio and Fr Philip Rinaldi. We owe the construction and the effort to make Atocha a reality to Fr Rinaldi,’ recalled Fr Lete. The image was blessed by the Superior of Spain’s St James the Greater Province (SSM), Fr Fernando García.
