28 January 2025

(ANS – Rome) – Nestled in the serene locality of Bandlaguda Jagir, Hyderabad, the Don Bosco Shrine stands as a testament to faith, community service, and youth empowerment. This sacred sanctuary, which has grown into a vibrant center of worship and spirituality, boasts a rich history and an inspiring vision for the future. Rooted in devotion to Don Bosco, it continues to nurture faith and serve as a beacon of Salesian charism.

A Journey of Growth and Faith

The Don Bosco Parish was canonically erected on May 24, 1995, under the guidance of Archbishop Most Rev. Samineni Arulappa. Initially, parish activities were hosted within the Provincial House campus. However, with the steady growth in the number of parishioners, the Salesians took the bold step of constructing a church. This effort culminated in the inauguration of the Don Bosco Shrine on February 24, 2003.

The shrine's Vision Statement reflects its dedication to nurturing faith, fostering spiritual growth, and spreading the word of God. Through prayer, sacraments, and good works, it works towards the holistic development of its community while extending its outreach to non-believers. Its mission also emphasizes promoting devotion to Don Bosco and working toward the shrine’s potential elevation to a Basilica.

The Mission Statement outlines several goals: conducting parish renewal programs, organizing workshops and seminars for elders and catechism teachers, providing systematic Bible study and religious instruction, and hosting youth camps to deepen faith. It also includes regular house visits, weekly prayer gatherings, and celebrating the annual feast day of Don Bosco. A key focus remains on fostering devotion to Don Bosco and promoting the spirit of the shrine.

Activities and Milestones

The Don Bosco Shrine is a hub of vibrant activities that cater to people of all ages, with a special focus on young people. Religious education for children and youth, seminars, workshops, faith renewal programs, and the annual Don Bosco Yatra are some of its key initiatives. Weekly prayer gatherings and house visits further strengthen the community’s spiritual life. The shrine also aspires to become a Youth Pilgrimage Center, aligning with its mission to empower young individuals.

In addition to these activities, the shrine supports voluntary catechists, mission stations, charitable initiatives, and homes for the destitute, extending its reach to those in need and upholding the Salesian tradition of service.

A Flourishing Community

Under the leadership of Parish Priest Fr. Rayappa, supported by Assistant Parish Priests Fr. Johannes and Fr. M. Balaswamy, the Don Bosco Shrine serves a thriving community of 750 families. The parish is home to 2 Catholic schools, 2 mission stations, and a dedicated team of voluntary catechists and charitable organizations, fostering education, service, and spiritual growth.

The shrine hosts several active groups that contribute significantly to its vibrant community life. The Legion of Mary (25 members) and Vincent De Paul Society (5 members) focus on charity and service to the needy. The Don Bosco Youth Group (50 members) empowers young people, while organizations like the Salesian Cooperators and the Charismatic Prayer Group play a vital role in fostering spiritual growth and community bonding.

Looking Ahead

As the Don Bosco Shrine continues to flourish, its vision of becoming a Basilica remains a guiding light. With its rich history, dynamic leadership, and unwavering commitment to faith and service, the shrine is poised to remain a cornerstone of spiritual life. By spreading devotion to Don Bosco and embodying the Salesian charism, it will undoubtedly inspire generations to come.
