27 November 2024

(ANS – Gambella) – The Salesians of Don Bosco, dedicated to the education and evangelization of youth, have been serving in Ethiopia since 1975. Recently, Brother John Paul Muller, the Economer General of the Salesians, embarked on a 10-day visit to Ethiopia to witness first-hand the remarkable work of the Salesians in the country. His visit was a testament to the congregation’s unwavering commitment to empowering young people and serving the most vulnerable communities

During his visit, Brother Muller had the opportunity to visit all 13 Salesian houses in Ethiopia, each with its unique set of programs and activities. From the bustling streets of Addis Ababa to the rural villages of Gambella, Brother Muller was deeply moved by the Salesians’ tireless efforts to provide education, training, and spiritual guidance to thousands of young people across the country. The final leg of Brother Muller’s visit took him to Gambella, a region in south-western Ethiopia that has been affected by conflict and displacement. Despite the challenges, the Salesians in Gambella have established a thriving presence, with a range of programs that cater to the needs of local youth, refugees, and the wider community.

A Beacon of Hope in Gambella

The Salesians’ work in Gambella is a shining example of their commitment to serving the most vulnerable. The community operates an academic school, a technical school, and a parish, all of which provide vital services to the local population. The academic school, which caters to students from kindergarten to high school, is renowned for its academic excellence and holistic approach to education. The school’s curriculum is designed to foster critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills, preparing students for success in an increasingly complex and interconnected world. The technical school, on the other hand, provides vocational training in areas such as Automotive, General mechanics, Carpentry, and several set of short term courses in IT, Hair dressing, Tailoring, plumbing, welding, crop production, poultry farming and the like. The school’s focus on practical skills and hands-on training has enabled countless young people to acquire the skills and knowledge needed to secure employment and improve their socio-economic prospects. The parish, which serves as a spiritual hub for the local community, offers a range of programs and activities designed to promote spiritual growth, social justice, and community development. From catechesis and sacramental preparation to outreach programs for refugees and vulnerable populations, the parish is a beacon of hope and compassion in the region.

A Commitment to Serving Refugees

One of the most striking aspects of the Salesians’ work in Gambella is their commitment to serving refugees. The region is home to several refugee camps, which provide shelter and protection to thousands of people fleeing conflict and persecution in neighbouring countries. The Salesians have established a range of programs and services designed to support refugees, including education, vocational training, and psychosocial support. Their work in this area is a testament to their commitment to serving the most vulnerable and marginalized members of society.

A Message of Hope and Solidarity

As Brother Muller concluded his visit to Ethiopia, he was filled with a sense of hope and solidarity. Despite the many challenges facing the country and its people, the Salesians remain committed to serving the young, the poor, and the marginalized. In a message to the Salesian community in Ethiopia, Brother Muller expressed his deepest gratitude for their tireless efforts and dedication to the mission. He also reaffirmed the congregation’s commitment to supporting the Salesians in Ethiopia, as they continue to serve the most vulnerable and disadvantaged members of society. As the Salesians of Don Bosco continue to serve in Ethiopia and around the world, their work remains a powerful testament to the transformative power of education, compassion, and solidarity.
