Italy – Digital meeting of the Salesian Cooperators Association World Council

24 September 2024

(ANS – Rome) – The World Council of the Association of Salesian Cooperators (ASC) met digitally on 21 and 22 September 2024. As is now customary in online meetings, two separate sessions were held on two consecutive days, in order to have more time to devote to the topics covered.

Some technical aspects regarding the drafting of the Directories were explored in this meeting, the first of the three planned online. These documents are of fundamental importance because, as envisaged by the Project of Apostolic Life (PAL), they allow the PAL to  be better adapted to different Salesian Cooperator circumstances.

There was also a resumption of the theme of the 6th World Congress scheduled for May 2026.

In this regard, the World Council approved the preparatory document for the Congress, thus starting the work of the various commissions for the preparation of this important event, which concludes a period of eight years since the 5th Congress. The event will also serve to give impetus to the Association for the next six years from 2026-2032, as well as to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the foundation of the Association.

In the session on Sunday 21 September, Antonio Boccia, World Coordinator, shared two topics of particular interest with the World Councillors for the Regions and the entire World Executive Secretariat  asking the entire Council to reflect on them.

In summary, the World Coordinator requested, first of all, to make the relationship between World Councillors for the Regions and Provincial Coordinators of the respective provinces more effective; he stressed the importance of posing as "leaders", operating in communion and synodality and avoiding being "managers" who only look to efficiency, neglecting the relationships between people.

The other no less important issue was to look at the ways to do "Vocational Animation" which, he stressed, does not mean "recruiting" new members but enabling a vocational accompaniment that helps to discern, to understand God's dream for each individual, with particular attention to young people.

The profound involvement of everyone in the work deserves to be highlighted, even overcoming the difficulties of languages thanks to the passion and dedication of translators Pierre Larocque and Rosa D’Addario, from Canada, Angelo Gatta and Marianna Matrone, from Brazil, Maria Cecilia Razzotti from Argentina, and Suzana Neto Sebastião, Angolan, from Italy.

The meeting ended by reminding everyone of the commitment to animate the Association in preparation towards the 150th anniversary which, in this second year, will pay close attention to the Project of Apostolic Life.
