In the European Mobility Week 2024 (16-22 September), it is worth highlighting, as in other editions, the participation of civil society, social organisations, institutions and companies which carry out activities (Mobility Actions) related to sustainable mobility to raise awareness among citizens about the individual and collective benefits of behaviour changes in the choice of a sustainable means of transport.
Here are some Salesian houses that have organised their "Mobility Actions" in collaboration with local administrations and other bodies.
In Huesca, in collaboration with other local authorities, children in the fourth class in primary schools were informed for three days about the advantages of traveling by city bus and the basic rules for the safe use of public transport.
The students at the Salesian St Anthony Abad primary school in Valencia participated in an artistic competition organised by the Metropolitan Transport Company in which they highlighted with drawings the importance of taking care of the environment, using public transport.
As part of their service-learning projects, students in the intermediate level of mechanisation at the Salesians in Monzón, six years ago created a parking area for bicycles and scooters and two years ago the students from the same level expanded it with a canopy to protect it from the elements. Jorge Alquézar, communication Delegate for the Salesian presence, explains that Monzón is the only city in Spain with European legislation for scooters and has European recognitions in terms of mobility; for this reason, the Salesian centre has been very committed to promoting the use of bicycles and scooters. "There are many young people who use these ecological means of transport on a daily basis, thanks to the awareness-raising work that has been done at the Salesian house in recent years," he explained.
Other locations such as Parla, Malaga, Zaragoza, Barcelona, Logroño, A Coruña, Alcalá de Henares, Algeciras, Barakaldo, Bilbao, Burgos, Cádiz, Donosti, Fuenlabrada, Granada, Jérez, Oviedo, Pamplona, Salamanca, Santander, Santiago, Seville, Valladolid or Vigo have participated in mobility actions in their cities. The boys and girls from Salesian settings have launched themselves in these initiatives under the motto "Combine and move".
In Montilla, for example, primary school students participated in the activities organised by the Municipality and had fun with the Road Safety Education Circuit of the Mapfre Foundation, making the slogan of the week their own: "Combine and move, Salesianos Montilla moves".
Finally, in Ciudad Real, more than 200 students from the Salesian Hermano Gárate school had the opportunity to learn in detail about making the city centre pedestrian friendly, during a special visit dedicated to them by the Councillor for Work and Mobility, Miguel Hervás, and the Councillor for Youth and Children, Pau Beltrán.
"We took advantage of the European Mobility Week to visit this school, located at the center of the pedestrianization works, and explain how these interventions will improve the quality of life and the environment of the school and high school," said Hervás.
The principal of the school, Miguel Ángel Muñoz López, stressed the usefulness and practicality of the meeting: "This presentation of the pedestrian project could even awaken the vocations of the students of recent years, interested them in engineering careers," he observed.
