Nepal – The newly opened Don Bosco Centre at Chhinchu, West Nepal, plans to provide education to the children and youth

23 August 2024

(ANS – Chhinchu) – The starting of Don Bosco Centre at Chhinchu was an answer to the clarion call of the congregation to ‘move to the peripheries’ where our service is most needed and relevant. The Don Bosco Centre nestling at a vantage location Chhinchu, is about 650 kms away from Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. The centre has a lot to offer in this thinly populated province of Nepal in the field of education, pastoral care and social development. The Nuncio’s visit in 2022 was a landmark event of the centre.

This centre, opened in February 2021 was the result of along study and attempt of starting a Salesian presence in the Western region of Nepal. This concrete action, infact was, a direct fruit of the silver jubilee celebration of Salesian presence in Nepal (2017).  The Salesians had set foot in Nepal in 1992 and within a span of 30 years, spread to nine centres, where 20 Salesians belonging to 5 Indian provinces serve.

At the Vicariate’s invitation, a Don Bosco presence was started in this region to cater to, with our Salesian charism, the pastoral needs of the people living here who hail from the lowest class and caste. In addition to this ministry, the Supplementary classes that we provide at three centres have nearly 180 students studying in nursery classes to Class X.

Our focus would be to establish a centre that excels in providing quality education and empowerment of the people of the area with a particular focus on youth. The real pioneer of this mission Fr. Thirumalachalil steered the centre to its present state and shape which is currently under the stewardship of Fr. Augusty Pulickal and Anil George Kujur.

A lot of people of the area go to India for work and education. There is great enthusiasm when the people here of the establishing of a Don Bosco school in this area.

Nepal Mission Coordinator
