South Sudan - Never give in to the temptation of pessimism: the Animation Visit of the General Councillor for the Missions

19 August 2024

(ANS – Juba) – The General Councillor for the Missions, Fr Alfred Maravilla, has been on an Animation Visit to the 5 Salesian communities in South Sudan. From 12 to 18 August 2024 he visited the communities of Juba, Maridi, Wau, Tonj and Kaujok. The visit allowed Fr Maravilla to appreciate the great work that the Salesians and the Salesian Family are doing to help many very poor young people and families displaced due to years of conflict and political instability.

Accompanied by the Delegate, Fr Joseph Can, the General Councillor for the Missions visited all the presences and was able to meet his confreres who work in the Provincial Delegation of South Sudan and Sudan. He held a conference in each community, met with young people and visited the communities of the Caritas Sisters of Jesus (SCG), the Missionary Sisters of Mary Help of Christians (MSMHC) and the Sisters of the Visitation of Don Bosco (VSDB) who work closely with the Salesians in Juba, Maridi and Tonj. He also visited the three FMA communities in Juba, Wau and Tonj.

“We Salesians are not a humanitarian organisation, nor are we social service providers. The need is great but our resources are limited. Therefore, it is necessary to have a strategic plan to prioritise our interventions in emergency situations, " Fr Maravilla explained.

"In an unstable and insecure situation like that of South Sudan, it is very easy to give in to the temptation of pessimism and negativism. Here, as in any difficult situation, our greatest missionary service is to bring and instill hope among people, especially young people. Our vocational training centres, schools and clinics are clear expressions of our hope for a better situation, "the Councillor stressed during the ‘good night‘ to the Salesian Family of Tonj.

At the end of his visit, Fr Maravilla also met the Delegate and the members of the Council of Delegation, to share his impressions and examine the way forward to consolidate the Salesian presence in the country.
