Peru – A reflection on the Salesian mission in Monte Salvado

31 July 2024

(ANS – Monte Salvado) – In the presence of Fr Juan Pablo Alcas, Superior of the Santa Rosa Province of Peru (PER), and his Provincial Councillors, a meeting began in these days in the Salesian Missionary Community in Monte Salvado.  A presence with more than 40 years of activity at the service of the most needy young people, where the Salesians animate a school with more than 200 students and two  Don Bosco Houses, for boys and girls.

After several hours of travel from Lima to Cusco, then to Calca and on to Monte Salvado, the Salesians arrived in the area of the missionary presence with more than 40 years of activity at the service of the most needy young people.

The Salesians serve different missionary areas, where they have to walk a lot to celebrate Mass, offer the sacraments and proclaim Jesus Christ.

One of the important tasks is the mission in the Salesian parish, where there are several youth groups, the Damas Salesianas Association, the 16th group of the Salesian Family, and  many people.

Monte Salvado: an eminently missionary work

The names of the Salesians who passed through these places are well known among the laity. Names like Fr Juan Polentini, Fr Horacio Loi, Fr Elio Pérez, among others, are still alive in the memories and hearts of so many people.

There are on average 230 students and 130 young boys and girls living in the boarding house. These young people live and grow up in contact with nature and animals. They transform the products of the earth and learn the values of patience and continuous dedication to see the results of their work.

Salesian life in Monte Salvado is an eminently missionary work. The Salesians who work in this community continue to give their lives to young people in the areas of Yanatile, Quello, Echarate, Megantoni, Quillabamba and Lares.

They are boys and girls with many needs, but the Salesians who work in this area of deep Peru continue to trust in Providence, continue to believe in missionary work in the Valley of the Incas and continue to work despite the many difficulties, with the sole purely Salesian purpose of forming "good Christians and upright citizens".
