The three-year project, launched in November 2023, has 75% support from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ, in German), 10% by the Don Bosco Mondo Salesian Mission Office based in Bonn, also in Germany, and the remaining 15% from local contribution from the works involved. It is a wide-ranging and well-structured initiative, and the Mexico-Guadalajara Province (MEG) is very grateful for the contribution and trust, both financial and structural, that the BMZ has provided, and also gives recognition to the great work and the profound social impact of DBM's development proposals.
Understanding that the works involved have different characteristics and components in those who benefit from them, the project will be accompanied in a particular and specific way for the two different groups.
The Blessed Philip Rinaldi community in Tijuana, which has been serving the caravans of migrants on their way to the United States for over 30 years, through the Padre Chava Refectory and Hostel and Don Bosco Women's Shelter, will focus on the youth sector; while the Salesian San José community in San Luis Potosí will work with the internally displaced who migrate in smaller numbers and belong to different States of Mexico, in search of new educational and work opportunities, especially those who are victims of organised crime, structural violence and other situations of vulnerability.
In any case, in its implementation, both sites will provide job training, psychological assistance, housing, food and other basic services, in order to complete in a dignified way the transit process of the people involved.
Currently, remodelling, equipment and staffing actions are being carried out in the two communities due to the project, as well as actions to plan the interventions to be carried out with beneficiaries. The proposal in both locations will be carried out through the provision of four short workshops for learning trades. In Tijuana, courses will be offered for hairdressers and cosmetics, cooking, construction trades and educational assistance; in San Luis Potosí, courses will cover electricity, machinery and tools, welding and customer service.
The Office of Planning and Development in the MEG Province (OPDI MEG) has managed the resources with the donor body and follows the implementation of the project with activities of accompaniment, monitoring, systematisation, evaluation and communication, promoting the achievement of the objectives established in the proposal.
