Guatemala – An Environmental Forum at the Don Bosco Educational Centre in San Pedro Carchá
San Pedro Carchá, Guatemala – April 2024 – The Don Bosco Educational Centre, located in San Pedro Carchá, in the Department of Alta Verapaz, Guatemala, became the focus of the environmental dialogue on Thursday, 18 April, hosting a forum entitled: "Forests, communities and natural reserves". The latter brought together several institutions committed to the conservation of the environment, in line with the appeal of Pope Francis in his Encyclical Laudato Si'. The event, which was attended by more than 600 people, was jointly organised by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, the National Forestry Institute, the National Council of Protected Areas, the Don Bosco Centre and with the support of the "RENACE" Hydroelectric Power Plant. During the day, the Don Bosco Centre shared with the participants the initiatives implemented for the care of the environment, including the planting of 30,000 trees, waste collection and differentiation programmes, campaigns to reduce the use of plastic bags, the promotion of organic farming and technical training in agro-forestry. The main objective of these initiatives is to extend this knowledge to the families and communities associated with the 3,000 students of the centre, so that they become multipliers of change.
