United States - Challenges and compassion: serving the homeless in Los Angeles

16 February 2024

Los Angeles, United States - February 2024 - In recent years, homelessness has emerged as a major problem in many areas, particularly in Los Angeles. It manifests itself in various forms and with multiple causes, presenting a complex challenge that cannot be easily addressed by a few individuals alone, but still requires everyone's contribution. On Friday 9 February, Miss Jen Schnorr, teacher at St John Bosco High School, organised a retreat for students to try to make a difference, collecting donations for 250 packed lunches and 250 bags of hygiene products. These donations were delivered to the Salesian Family Youth Centre and then on the following Saturday and Sunday, distributed to the needy in the Skid Row area. The social activity was accompanied by a training session and a moment of reflection and prayer, during which the organisers of the initiative realised the profound impact these experiences can have on young people, particularly in raising their awareness of the plight of the less fortunate.
